H-E-B Grocery Company is a privately held supermarket chain based in San Antonio, Texas, founded in 1905. The company operates more than 435 stores across Texas and northeast Mexico under multiple banners — H-E-B (the core format), Central Market (upscale organic and specialty), Joe V's Smart Shop (discount), and Mi Tienda (Hispanic-focused) — along with Favor Delivery, its on-demand delivery service. H-E-B employs over 145,000 people (called "Partners"), generates an estimated $46+ billion in annual revenue, and holds a dominant grocery market share in most major Texas metros. It is the largest privately held company and largest private employer in the state.

H-E-B is one of the most vertically integrated grocers in the U.S. The company operates 13+ manufacturing facilities in Texas — including dairy plants, bakeries, tortilla lines, chip factories, meat processing, and frozen food production — and manufactures roughly half of its own-brand products in-house, with the rest contracted out. Its Own Brands portfolio spans nearly 7,000 SKUs across a tiered strategy: the premium H-E-B line (often matching or exceeding national brand quality), Hill Country Fare (value tier), and specialty lines like H-E-B Organics, H-E-B Select Ingredients, Meal Simple, Central Market, and H-E-B Texas Roots. Private label represents approximately 25% of total sales at significantly higher margins than branded equivalents. For national brands, H-E-B manages vendor relationships through category merchants, and the company is known for being selective about shelf space — strong private-label positioning means brands need to bring genuine differentiation or consumer demand to earn and hold placement. H-E-B also runs its own trucking fleet and distribution centers, with most stores receiving deliveries three to five times per week.

On the media side, H-E-B operates H-E-B Retail Media, a growing retail media network built in partnership with Epsilon that reaches more than 8 million households weekly. In mid-2025 the platform launched self-service capabilities for promoted product campaigns on heb.com and the My H-E-B app, with integration through Skai for additional planning and optimization tools. Brands in grocery, CPG, fresh, beverage, household, and health and wellness typically engage H-E-B to access the Texas market specifically — the company's deep regional loyalty, vertically integrated supply chain, and concentrated footprint mean that winning distribution at H-E-B is often the single most important retail relationship for brands selling in the state.
